A Long Tradition of Sports
Griffith Stadium, pictured at left, was home not only to the Washington Senators but also to many teams from adjacent Howard University. Though the stadium was demolished decades ago, Nellie’s Sports Bar will bring back the historic element of sports entertainment to the greater U Street community.

An Historic Building
Nellie’s Sports Bar is located in the former Addison Scurlock Photography Studio. Scurlock was best known for his impressive portraits of Washington’s African American elite during the glory days of the U Street corridor. The lighting that was required to produce these fabulous portraits no doubt inspired the beautiful high ceilings of our building. Other historic attributes of our building include:
~ Authentic Griffith Stadium sinks
~ Antique showcases and historic photographs
~ Elegant pub-room walls and bar-back mirrors
~ Eighteenth-century lighting fixtures from the Baltimore Train Station
~ Unique signage, such as our “open” sign and our vintage scoreboard

U Street: A Legacy of Entertainment
The U Street area of has long been known as one of Washington, DC’s most vibrant entertainment districts. Duke Ellington, along with many other notable entertainers, spent much of their lives here. Nellie’s Sports Bar features a performance space that will serve as a venue for all kinds of sports-related entertainment; we also offer a stadium-sized TV for larger events in addition to many large plasma-screen TVs.
